About us
AiR was set up in 2003 by Kate Cheyne and Jo Townshend and is now a four person practice with a varied portfolio of work from bespoke houses and cafes to community centres and key worker housing. The name ‘Architects In Residence’ came from their interest in gaining an in-depth understanding both of a site and the occupants before a solution is found. This allows sustainable principles appropriate to the place and end user to be applied at the outset.Seeing ‘Building’ as being essentially collaborative in nature, AiR works closely within a consultant team so that all aspects of design are considered at an early stage.
The Practice has successfully delivered complex design projects consisting of tight budgets, constrained sites and ambitious, but considered designs. AiR is led by the desire to be thorough in the analysis but be playful with the design.
AiR have recent experience of prefabricated systems having completed an award winning residential project formed of solid timber panels and are now applying both timber frame prefabrication and steel frame prefabrication to current projects.
The practice is a listed Chartered Architectural Practice with the RIBA, and on the Green Register of construction professionals and is currently applying for Constructionline.
DIRECTORS
Both directors come to building design with a practical understanding and knowledge of materials and detailing. AiR combine this with more theoretical concerns of the way that we see, experience and occupy space with regards to both the process of design, the process of fabrication and the final built project.
