Project Description

A rear extension to a Victorian terraced house to form an open plan kitchen /dining /living area. The roof takes an unusual and complex form as it had to conform to a familiar set of site limitations for back extensions. The 8m long by 5m wide full width extension created a light locked room in the middle of the house. To ensure light reached this room a section of glass was to be sandwiched between the rear of the main house and a solid section of roof to the rear of the new extension. To avoid loss of light for the neighbours, planning required the adjoining wall to be no higher than 2.3m. The position of existing windows in the rear wall affected the choice of pitch. Internally the extension is a white box that is only read as an architectural form from above. From the three storeys over, the roof was designed to be enjoyed as a folded landscape and so it was important that the roof was detailed as carefully from above, as below.
