i. Pembroke Studios, Chelsea, London

Client: Private
Completion Date: March 2005
Contract sum: £282.000

Project Description

Chelsea was favoured by many leading artists during the 19th and 20th centuries. Pembroke Studios were built in the mid-19th century as a group of protected courtyard studios designed specifically for female artists. This studio had been badly renovated during the 1970’s and, working with Retrouvius Design, we aimed to restore the spirit of the building. The double height space internally faces north and so, originally, the main elevation would have been solid brickwork to block out the South light. Now being a family home, south facing windows were needed, but we placed them into a new London Stock brick panel. Internally, we opened back up the downstairs plan and incorporated the kitchen into the main space. Much reclaimed teak was used to refer to the original artists working surfaces and to hide the functionality of a kitchen.
